Executive summary
- A microbiological result is defensible only when the sample was collected, preserved, transported and recorded with control.
- ISO 19458 provides a reference for planning sampling regimes, procedures, transport, handling and storage until analysis begins.
- The plan should separate sampling objective, water type, point, container, preservation, transport time and chain of custody.
- AquaVerify Cloud helps connect point, sample, operator, method, product, result, review and report in a traceable flow.
- ENUMERA, INDICA, ISO/EPA Kits and Lab Essentials provide different operational routes according to the analytical objective.
Technical content
The sample is part of the result
In water microbiology, analysis does not start in the laboratory. It starts when the team decides where to sample, why, with which container, under which conditions and how quickly the sample will reach analysis. A result may be technically correct and still lose value if the sampling chain is not documented.
Three sampling objectives
A point can be sampled to understand original water quality, verify a network or check the effect of a corrective action. Each objective changes how the sample is collected, the aseptic level, the record required and the interpretation of the result.
Digital traceability
Recording point, date, operator, container, preservation, transport and reception avoids manual reconstruction. Digital traceability allows the microbiological result to keep sample context through the CoA or final report.

Comparison table
| Element | Risk if unmanaged | Evidence needed | AquaVerify support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sampling point | Result without context | Location, matrix, objective and frequency | Point record in Cloud |
| Container | Contamination or loss of representativeness | Type, sterility, lot and preparation | Lab Essentials and inventory |
| Transport | Microbiological change before analysis | Time, temperature, custody and reception | LIMS record |
| Method | Weak or non-comparable interpretation | Method, controls, operator and review | ISO/EPA Kits and Cloud |
| Report | Fragmented evidence | CoA, notes, approval and history | AquaVerify Cloud |
Decision matrix
Use this matrix to prioritize which operational route to activate before procurement, implementation, audit or training.

FAQ
Is ISO 19458 an analytical method?
No. It is a microbiological sampling reference covering planning, procedures, transport, handling and storage until analysis begins.
Why does transport matter so much?
Because microbiological status can change between collection and analysis. Time, temperature and custody records protect interpretation.
How does AquaVerify Cloud fit?
It connects point, sample, operator, method, lot, result, review and report in a traceable flow.
